Couple & Pre-Shoot Photography in Colombo: 7 Tips for a Relaxed Session
A couple shoot should feel like an evening out together, not an exam. Whether it is a pre-shoot before your wedding, an engagement session or simply photos of the two of you, the best images come from good light, a place that suits you and enough time to forget the camera is there. Here is how I plan relaxed couple sessions in and around Colombo.
1. Book the light, not just the date
I work mostly in natural light, so the time of day matters more than almost anything else. In Colombo the softest light comes in the first hour after sunrise and the last hour or so before sunset. Midday sun near the equator is harsh and straight overhead, which means squinting and dark shadows under the eyes. For a beach or seafront session, I plan to start about ninety minutes before sunset so we have warm light first and the blue glow after the sun goes down.
2. Choose a location that feels like you
Pick a place that means something or matches your style, rather than the place everyone else uses. Colombo gives you a lot of range within a short drive: the sea along Galle Face Green and Mount Lavinia, the trees and paths of Viharamahadevi Park, the colonial arches around Independence Square and the old buildings of the Fort area. Clean modern walls and textured concrete work beautifully for a minimal, editorial look. If you want two different feels, choose two spots close together so we spend the session shooting, not sitting in traffic. Some sites need permission or have rules about photography, so I check that before the day.
3. Plan outfits that work together
Your outfits should complement each other without matching exactly. Soft neutrals, earthy tones and solid colours photograph well in daylight, while large logos and busy small patterns can distract. Bring one smart outfit and one relaxed one if you like, and think about the location: flowing fabric moves nicely in the sea breeze, and comfortable shoes help if we will be walking. For pre-shoots, many couples choose one outfit that hints at the wedding and one that is simply them.
4. Move instead of posing
Stiff poses are the fastest way to look uncomfortable. Instead of holding positions, I give you small things to do: walk together, talk, whisper something that makes your partner laugh, or turn back toward the sea. I guide where you stand and where the light falls, and photograph what happens in between. Most couples tell me they forgot about the camera after the first fifteen minutes, which is exactly when the best frames start to appear.
5. Bring your pet, or a prop with meaning
A dog on the beach, the car you restored together, the café where you had your first date: personal details turn a nice photo into your photo. Pets are welcome, and they bring natural laughter, though it helps to have a friend come along to hold the lead between shots. If you are thinking of something more ambitious, such as a helicopter, a vintage car or a hotel venue, tell me early so we can plan timing, access and permissions.
6. Have a monsoon backup plan
Sri Lanka's monsoons bring sudden afternoon showers, so I keep the forecast in view for the days before your shoot and agree a backup date with you. Light overcast is actually lovely for portraits, giving soft, even skin tones, and a little rain can make for romantic, moody images under an umbrella. Heavy rain is another matter, so we either move to a covered spot or reschedule rather than rush the session.
7. Use the session to prepare for the wedding
A pre-shoot is also a rehearsal. You get used to how I work and how I give directions, and I learn your good sides, how you laugh and what feels natural for you. That makes a real difference on the wedding day, when time is tight and emotions are high. Many couples also use their pre-shoot images on save-the-dates, the welcome board or a slideshow at the reception.
